Grassroots is our kind of word…

Transition Kamloops hosted a one-day Climate Action Fest in January 2024 thanks to a Social and Community Development Grant from the City of Kamloops. This grant supports special projects proposed by community members and groups to address problems related to the City’s Social Plan or the Livability and Sustainability pillar of the Council Strategic Plan. In our case, we wanted to create a welcoming event for residents to talk about the many different impacts of climate change and to propose–and carry out–local, doable solutions to address these. One of the requirements of this grant was to report on the outcome of our project, and we were pleased to discover the City has featured an excerpt and related video on its Community page.

Here is the story, Empowering Community Climate Action through Grassroots Initiatives, and here is the Climate Action Fest 2.0 video.

This was an inspiring and uplifting event, and we’re equally pleased that a number of the resulting projects continue to yield results. Well done, Climate Action teams! The following articles provide some background on this Climate Action Fest:

  • Climate Action Fest 2.0 – what an energizer!
  • Join a climate action team!

  • (Note that some of the projects in the article on action teams have been completed and some are ongoing, while some teams chose to compost their projects. We periodically provide updates on project status in the newsletter, most recently in our “rear view mirror” report for 2024.)
