If you believe in pollinator & beneficial insect friendly gardening practices – meaning pesticide bylaw changes that are ecologically friendly, you’ll want to attend the following open house and ask for the changes.
- Saturday, May 30th, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at Interior Savings Centre – Parkside Lounge
Some things you can ask to be put in the plan are:
1. Recognition of pollination as important to urban agriculture & food security
2. More public awareness of the role of wild bees and pollination.
3. The recognition of urban gardens as excellent forage habitat for bees. (2008, Paris study)
4. recognition of beneficial predator insects such as lady bugs, hover flies & parasitic wasps to our ecosystem and their importance in using less pesticides.
5. Avoidance of pesticides –February/March, 2012 studies have recently shown that neo-nicotinoid systemic pesticides (Imidacloprid, Thiamethoxam, Clothianidin and Dinotefuran) affect honeybee navigation as well as affect the ability for bumblebees to produce queens.
6. Strengthen Kamloops pesticide bylaws.
