All-candidates’ debate on the environment Sept 8

Transition Kamloops and the Kamloops Chapter of the BC Sustainable Energy Association invite the public to register to attend a virtual all-candidates’ debate on the environment that will take place at 7 pm on Wednesday, September 8, 2021. Pre-registration via Eventbrite is required, and all questions need to be submitted in advance.

All the local candidates have confirmed their attendance with the exception of Frank Caputo (Conservative), who declined the invitation.

The impacts of climate change are present and intensifying. Our region experienced heat domes, wildfires, flooding, and drought. The recent report from the IPCC painted a clear picture of a “code red” for humanity — a call for immediate, emergency action.

Where do the local candidates stand on environmental issues? What commitments are they making to create a net zero emissions future, safeguard the environment, and maintain a healthy and prosperous land for future generations? This is an opportunity for candidates to join a national conversation at the local level, and to highlight the policies which they propose to address these and other urgent environmental issues.

The debate in Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo will be part of the 100 Debates on the Environment project, which is coordinating virtual debates in ridings across our country. The 100 Debates project is non-partisan and aims to bring voters together at the riding level to hear candidates’ best policy ideas for the environment.

The environment is a top issue for Canadians this election, and interest in our region is particularly high given the recent climate change impacts which have been so keenly felt here.

Says Deb Alore, BCSEA member and spokesperson for the organizing committee, “The state of the environment and climate change is top-of-mind for so many folks right now. This next election will be an opportunity to meet the challenge, or keep kicking the can down the road. We are providing this venue for voters to learn about the positions of each of our local candidates on these important topics.”

All interested attendees are required to register in advance through Eventbrite. After registering, attendees will be prompted to submit their suggestions for questions in advance, and organizers will put the “audience favourites” to the candidates. Full instructions will be provided upon registration.

We hope you’ll join us for this exciting event!
