Monday, September 26 is the first day of The Great Green Transportation Tune-Up! It’s a whole week of activities with a focus on sustainable transportation – and it’s a whole lot of fun! Find the full schedule at www.kamloops350.com.
Have you registered for the Transit Treasure Hunt? It’s a scavenger hunt with a twist – take a tour of the City by transit and become eligible for great prizes. Local merchants have donated literally thousands of dollars in prizes. Sign up with a friend, or two or three!
Another way to win some of those prizes is to make a pledge to green your transportation next week. By making a commitment to rotate your tires, organize a carpool, or give the bus a try, you’ll be doing your part to reduce your personal carbon emissions from transportation – it’s good for you and good for the planet too. If you want to try the bus for a day or for a week, this is your chance to get a free transit pass.
There will also be spot prizes for lucky transit riders – just ride the bus to win!
“How to Boil a Frog” a comic documentary that urges us to take action on climate change will be shown at the House of Learning at TRU at 7 pm on Tuesday night. Just like all the events this week, it’s completely free.
On Wednesday, the BCSEA will host a panel discussion on The Future of Transportation at 7 pm in IB 1015 at TRU – see separate article for details on that one.
The big event for the week is the Transportation Imagination Station, a street closure on 2nd Avenue beside the Farmer’s Market on Saturday, October 1st from 9 am to 3 pm. Check out Cool Wheels, a show featuring the coolest ways to move, including hybrids, electric vehicles, a Segway, and even a penny farthing bike for comparison! The UBC engineers are bringing up their solar car, Raven, so you’ll be able to talk directly to the designers of the future.
Also at the Imagination Station on Saturday, you can take in the Bike, Bus or Boogie Challenge, an event where participants using different modes of transportation are compared on the time taken to complete a specific set of errands around town and the carbon emissions produced en route. When the participants are all back at Gaglardi Square, they’ll take part in a panel discussion at 11:30 am.
You’ll be invited to share your suggestions for what Kamloops should do to improve transportation in the city – bring all your ideas (crazy or practical) to the Imagination Station or send them via e-mail to kamloops350@gmail.com.
Throughout the day, they’ll also be having Slow Bike Un-Races, with categories for kids & adults. The idea is to test your balance, travelling as slowly as possible in a 20 m line. Bring the kids down, and have fun. Once again, there WILL be prizes!
There will also be a Bicycle Show & Shine, Tire Pressure Checking Blitzes, and the Transit Future Bus – come down and check it out!
