Modernizing the Mineral Tenure Act – the next steps In mid-September, the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) passed a resolution recommending that the government modernize the Mineral Tenure Act. This resolution requests amendments to the Act which will ensure that local governments (city councils, regional districts, and first nations councils) will be consulted before registration of a mineral claim that could affect their communities. What happens to the resolution now? It has been sent to government officials in Victoria who will then pass it on to the appropriate Ministry for review. The results of that review will come back to the UBCM in the spring, and will be passed on to the executive. Ajax mine survey

Kamloops Voters’ Society launches Ajax mine survey The Kamloops Voters’ Society has launched an online survey about the proposed Ajax mine. The survey can be filled out online at www.kamloopsvoterssociety.ca. The deadline for responses is October 14. Only one response per city household is allowed ( per IP address). As reported in the Kamloops Daily News, the group wants to remain neutral on the mine issue. While they can’t afford a scientific survey, board members are hoping for widespread participation. The 20 questions consider economic benefits, environmental factors, impact on tourism and whether the City Council should be more engaged on the proposal.
